Thornton Steward Village Green Improvement

Yorkshire Dales Leader Programme

The parish council were awarded £7440 to address the problem of erosion at the edge of their village green.

The area forms the central feature of the settlement and is included in the Conservation Area as an ‘important open space’.  Because of increased car ownership by residents and visitors, there are more vehicles parked on the narrow lane running through the green.  Drivers have difficulty turning and reversing within the confines of the village’s roads and tracks and this has resulted in major damage to the edges of the green which is increasing all the time. After consultation with NYCC, the conclusion was that the provision of granite setts to line the edge of the green would be the solution. This method has been successful in several Dales villages suffering from the same problem of erosion.  This work would be carried out by NYCC, Highways and Transportation, which will contribute 70% of the costs of the scheme if the work can be completed in 2010/2011.
