Dales Farmers find a voice with LEADER

Applications from six projects have now been approved for funding from the LEADER programme, which aims to encourage economic and community well-being in the area. Grants ranging from £15k to £70k have been allocated to projects covering a wide range of activities. Amongst those to benefit is the Yorkshire Dales Farmer Network, which has received £25k in funding.

The purpose of the Farmer Network is to give farmers in the area access to advice and support which will benefit their business and the environment. The project aims to increase the profitability of farm businesses, maintain a sustainable farming population and enhance the natural resource base of the Yorkshire Dales. It will also help to strengthen the voice and influence of farmers in the Yorkshire Dales and AONB areas.

On receiving the grant Chris Clark of the Yorkshire Dales Farmer Network said, ““We are very pleased with the response from farmers to the setting up of the Yorkshire Dales Farmer Network (YDFN), and even more pleased to win Leader support. The award will allow the network to become established during the next 3 years and to then to develop into a business that will significantly help the viability Dales farm businesses.” Other projects to receive LEADER funding are: The Washburn Heritage Centre, Craven Volunteer Driver Project, Extending Practice/Celebrating Space, Settle Hydro Project and Yorkshire Dales Sustainable Communities Project, which received a massive £70k.
